The Most Important Process for Sustainability in Sludge Disposal: SLUDGE DRYING

Eliminating or reducing sludge disposal costs brings significant economic and environmental benefits. The most important phase of sludge disposal methods is sludge drying technologies. Sludge drying methods reduce the volume of dewatered sludge by approximately 70%, thus eliminating transportation costs and significantly reducing disposal costs, while ensuring sludge disposal in an environmentally friendly and regulatory-compliant manner. Dried sludge, considering its characteristics, can be used in the production of building materials, as refuse-derived fuel (RDF) for energy production, or in applications on soil. This situation essentially transforms sludge from a problem into a benefit.

REDCO Proses Environmental and Energy Technologies Inc., with its extensive experience in the wastewater treatment sludge sector and its large engineering team, operates in the complete process of sludge drying equipment design, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning, offering turnkey solutions. REDCO Proses can design and manufacture solar or thermal sludge drying systems based on the sludge characteristics (domestic or industrial) and capacity on a project basis. The company operates in compliance with ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management Standards and ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management Standards.

The unique feature of the REDCO solar sludge mixer is its ability to continuously and homogenously mix the sludge. In doing so, it prevents the formation of odors, which is a major issue in sludge drying and disposal, by avoiding the creation of anaerobic conditions. The REDCO solar sludge mixer rapidly removes moisture from the surface of the sludge, reducing its moisture content and increasing the solid matter ratio. At REDCO, each project is specifically designed, calculated, and manufactured based on information such as sludge characteristics, input solid matter ratio, target dryness, sludge volume, and location. When the space allocated for drying in the facility is insufficient, thermal drying solutions can be offered.

REDCO Proses generates about 90% of its revenue from the export of sludge drying equipment to many countries worldwide. The company has completed several prestigious solar or thermal sludge drying projects in three continents (Europe, North Africa, and Asia) with various capacities for municipal and private sector stakeholders, both domestic and industrial.

In recent years, solar sludge drying facilities have become a popular choice worldwide due to their low operating costs compared to other drying methods and their environmentally friendly nature. REDCO’s solar sludge drying references make up about 80% of its total references. Notable references include Turkey’s largest solar sludge drying facility, the Şanlıurfa Municipality Solar Sludge Drying Facility, which has a 120 tons/day sludge feeding capacity and was commissioned in 2019 with EU support. Thanks to its 90% output dryness rate, dried sludge from the facility is used in soil applications for final disposal. In New Delhi, India, the Okhla Solar Sludge Drying Facility, with a 630 tons/day feeding capacity, is also noteworthy. The Kilis Municipality Solar Sludge Drying Facility, with a 24 tons/day capacity and completed in 2020, was built to address the increase in sludge due to population growth caused by migration. REDCO also completed the solar sludge drying facilities within the EU-supported wastewater treatment projects of Kastamonu, Iğdır, Bismil, Sorgun, and Niksar in Turkey. Additionally, REDCO has recently commissioned North African reference facilities, such as the Had Soualem, Nador, and Dakhla Solar Sludge Drying Facilities in Morocco. One of the largest solar sludge drying facilities in the world is the İZBAŞ Solar Sludge Drying Facility, built in 2016, which, like other references, has an automatic feeding and automatic dry sludge transfer system, and is an industrial sludge drying reference. Another important example is the solar sludge drying facility built for the UNILEVER Konya HPC plant. In 2023, a thermal sludge drying facility with an 80 tons/day capacity was completed and commissioned for S.S. Yeşil Çevre Hizmet ve İşletme Kooperatifi in Bursa. This facility uses waste heat from the existing sludge incineration facility for drying, achieving a 90% reduction in operating costs, making it a new and significant reference.

REDCO always prioritizes being reliable, sustainable, offering the best price/performance ratio, and ensuring customer satisfaction. The company combines engineering services with the advantage of domestic production to provide high-quality and competitive solutions. REDCO is an innovative company that closely follows and adapts emerging technologies to its systems and facilities.

REDCO Proses stands out as one of the leading companies in the sludge drying market due to its quality, large team, and post-sales support and spare parts supply capabilities. When the design and manufacturing stages are completed, factory tests can be conducted by the customer. For a facility that has reached the commissioning phase, REDCO provides training, technical support, and installation services by expert supervisors, ensuring continued technical support throughout the warranty period.
